The Armory Show - Art Profile and Schedule - New York Magazine

The Armory Show - Art Profile and Schedule - New York Magazine

Ahh, the Armory Show. What a great piece of everyday-once-a-year-fun. As teh art market is about 2 seconds from detonating under the current economic strain, art dealers world wide are hitting every art flea market possible to try and make as much cash before it all goes away.

Some numbers: If an art gallery has to pay about $40,000 per booth at an art fair, and it costs about $100,000 to ship all the work to the art fair and another $14,000 to pay everyone (food, drinks, salaries, clothes, taxis, etc) for the week- how much art has to be sold? And if you are hitting up 10 or so fairs a year- how much money does it take before you're "Back In Black"?

40+100+14=154
154x10=1540
Translate to money= $1,540,000 in expenses
Oh, thats only 3 Julie Merehtus. NO big deal! Good thing there is so much extra cash floating around in the art market right now. They'll be fine!
