CNN has a little video up about a family in Seattle that has abandoned the car in favor of riding bikes everywhere. It seems like the dad is very into this idea, as the wife and kids are not shown on bikes, but rather walking or renting a hybrid car.
The dad says the family saves $200 a month in gas and insurance, but this is not clear as to whether or not this is after they rent the car. Additionally, the dad says the family is saving 4,000 pounds of pollution a year from the environment. I believe that one.
If we could get more people in this country to live closer to work or to have a lifestyle that allows for less-car oriented lifestyles, I think we would all have a lot more money in our pockets and a lot less dirt in the air.
